Major scientific results

  1. A unique set-up for cooling of the complex molecules in a supersonic jet to several degrees Kelvin has been created. The fine-structure fluorescence and excitation spectra of a number of various aromatic molecules have been measured. The fast numeric algorithms for calculation of the vibrational frequencies and intensities of vibronic transitions in complex molecules have been developed.
  2. It is shown that the spatial solitons (not divergent light channels and tracks with a width of 10-20 microns and a length of 30 cm) are formed in any liquid films (1-10 microns thick) under any introduced pulsed or continuous even low-average-power (1-10 mW) laser radiation.
  3. A method for the optimal choice of combination of external optoelectronic feedback loops has been developed. It allows a flexible control of the output temporal structure and implementation of new regimes in the solid-state lasers with the given in advance envelope of ultra-short pulse trains.
  4. The influence of cavity configuration (length) in its stability region on the spatial radiation structure and radiation threshold at longitudinal pumping has been theoretically studied. The synchronization peculiarities of transverse modes in lasers based on Nd-activated crystals, ceramics and glasses have been studied experimentally. Conditions for a significant threshold reduction in the critical configurations have been found. The best agreement with the calculated results was observed for Nd:YLF lasers.
  5. The difference frequency generation of 1.63 THz radiation has been accomplished in GaSe crystal. The Nd:YLF (100) laser with a longitudinal diode pumping and acousto-optic Q-switching has been used as a source of dual-frequency pumping.
  6. A unique design for the laser-electron X-ray source based on Thomson scattering has been developed. The source will fill a gap between the X-ray tubes and synchrotron radiation sources. Possible applications of the Thomson X-ray source include XAFS-spectroscopy, angiography of small animals and non-invasive human coronary angiography.
