(Andrei Sakharov) was a Soviet physicist who became, in the words of the Nobel Peace Committee, a spokesman for the conscience of mankind. He was fascinated by funda- mental physics and cosmology, but he had to spent two decades designing nuclear weapons.

Main directions of research of the Laboratory
  • experimental and theoretical research into the interaction of laser radiation with matter with the view to study the possibilitiies of generating high-energy electrons and ions in plasma
  • modelling of the physical processes occurring in laser fusion targets (absorption and reflection of laser radiation from plasma of thin-walled targets, development of hydrodynamic instabilities in plasma, generation of X-ray radiation)
  • studies of the possibilities of laser pulse profiling with the view of symmetrization of ablation pressure in plasma
  • studies of explosive emission of relativistic electrons from laser plasma
  • development of phase filters for increasing the laser radiation contrast
  • development of methods of ideal synchronization of nanosecond and picosecond laser pulses with the view of conducting experiments on their combined impact on plasma 
  • studies of the generation of rigid X-ray radiation in laser plasma
