(I. Tamm) was elected Corresponding Member of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences in 1933, and in 1953 he became an Academician. He shared the 1946 State Prize with Vavilov, Cerenkov, and Frank, and is a Hero of Socialist Labour.

The main directions of research of the Laboratory are the development, studies and applications of high-pressure high-power gas lasers (as well as of laser systems on their basis) (electron beam-pumped, self-maintained discharge-pumped and electroionization discharge-pumped) generating a high-power coherent radiation in mid IR range (óï2, óï, N2ï, NH3 lasers), visible and near IR range (lasers on inert gases Ar/Xe; He/Kr; He/Ar; He/Ne) and UV range (KrF laser) of the spectrum.
